In Honor of the Inauguration . . .a little pontification on a good coffee.

I've been sitting on this since December, but this seem like the right day to publish it.

Caribbean Coffee Company's Obama Blend coffee shares some characteristics with our new president . . . and has some aspects that are decidedly different. But that's not a bad thing.

Obama Blend is what I usually call "thinking coffee." It's the kind of beverage that demands you stop what you are doing, take a moment, and consider the flavor even as you are tasting it. It's finely crafted and dark roasted, similar to CCC's other flavors that I've tried, yet there are some really interesting notes underneath the bold, deep flavors it shares with the company's other blends. Flavors of raisin, maybe, but more bright than sweet. I'm no expert, just a guy that knows what he likes; somebody in the industry can quantify that much better. In fact, in the entire 12 oz bag of whole beans I ground and consumed over the course of a weekend, I never quite nailed it down -- not through my vac pot, nor my french press, nor my moka pot . . . but I know I liked it a good deal.

And that's probably why the coffee in honor of Barack Obama is different than the man himself. He's very popular and has wide appeal, evidenced by his decisive victory in the election. The coffee . . . honestly? It's not for everyone. I really like it -- probably my favorite CCC blend next to the Cubano -- but my sister, who usually shares my coffee sensibilities, was not a huge fan. Fortunately for her, she takes her coffee with milk, an act that moderates the Obama Blend's unique undertone and makes it more like your usual very nice dark roasted coffee.

President Obama strikes me as a very cerebral man, and, because this coffee makes me think, perhaps it makes me a little more similar to him. Encourages me to exhibit some of his characteristics -- like being energetic. Would that it could improve my jump shot. Nonetheless, a blend in honor of a man that, through drinking it, encourages you to invoke his braininess is quite a fitting tribute.
